Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe

The Blue Rascal, thankfully,  has that increasingly-rare feature … a manually-shifted gearbox.  If the current trend continues, eoncoboxes will be the only new cars so equipped (and maybe even those will give way to CVTs).   The use of the traditional manual transmission even in sports and performance cars is rapidly fading away.  Why?  Take a look at this Fifth Gear (the other Brit TV motoring series) video, comparing a manual Cayman with a DSG counterpart:

McQueen Porsche Driving Porn

Van Svenson, Vicariously

About a foot of snow is still on the ground, and the temp is just over zero.  Summer performance tires don’t work so well in these conditions, and my garage is basically unheated.  I’m staying indoors, a bit bored, so I vicariously go 944 Cup racing with Van Svenson at Mosport in 2013.

In case, you don’t know his car, check this out …

BTW, I definitely recommend that you subscribe to Van Svenson’s YouTube Channel. A must for any 944 addict, whether you are into track action or not.

Pronouncing Car Names

Here’s how I learned (via an article I read in a car magazine in the 50s — was it Road & Track?) to pronounce the German name of one of our favorite cars:

I am always to amazed to hear some Porsche owners refer to their own cars with a silent “e”.  Here is a bit more on the matter:  http://german.about.com/library/weekly/aa020401b.htm and — wait for it …

And while we are at it, how about Japanese brands?
