My New GT3

Hey!  I do dearly love my 944, but having a GT3 — or just about any 911 of whatever ilk — wouldn’t make me unhappy.   Imagine my surprise when I was gifted (thanks, Jim!) with a 2007 GT3 this morning.  Probably won’t meet Bring A Trailer or some purists’ standards for authenticity and livery, but I think it is pretty cool.    Take a look:

Fender Developments

Okay, the driver side fender is shaping up.  Now in primer, ready for the next step of prep.  Dennis shows off its subtle curves.  Hope Michelle is watching …

Seven: A Schumacher Tribute

Today Dennis unveiled his latest sculpture, “Seven”, a tribute to seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, Michael Schumacher.  Dennis had dropped by my office and as he was parting he mentioned that he had the sculpture in the back of his van out in the parking lot.  So we hauled the seven-footer out and placed it on the ground for a few impromptu test exposures.  Here goes:

If any of this looks good enough, we will post some images on his SpeedfortheNeed site.

The Hoyt Hand

Today, as I struggle with ailing back  and knee, Dennis lends a hand to weld in a little new metal on my fender-in-progress.  Not every day I can say that a world-famous artist did my car’s bodywork …

We chat about Dennis’ forthcoming sculpture gallery, about our mutual fascination with Delahaye, Talbot-Lago, etc., and about his search for a good Lotus Espirit.

Tomorrow Dennis and I plan to meet to finalize some decisions around the new website I am building for his charitable work, so stay tuned …

Closing In On The Fender

Today Eric and I start planning for replacement of the left front fender, as its slow, gradual preparation has almost reached that point.  During this coming week, we expect to get  the thing in prime, then install it and attack the next most “needy” component or area.   The plan is to gradually work piece, minimizing downtime to that the ‘Rascal can be used as much as possible for what it was designed — driving.  Spirited driving, at that.

Another Saturday at Eric’s

Today I look in on Eric’s shop.  I see that Chris is still working on his door, but in the final stages with primer.  As usual, I join a few old geezers hanging out and talking cars, mostly.  The featured vehicle of the day would have to be a frame-off restomod in process:  a circa 1970 Chevy stepside pickup running a highly chromed and mildly-modded 350, a turbo 400 hydro and 3.07 gearing.  Ummm … no Porsches to be seen …

By the time I returned home, snow had begun falling again in earnest.  Missed my window of opportunity to take the Rascal for a spin on clear roads.   We will see what tomorrow brings.

A Winter Wash for the Blue Rascal

20140215-DSCN5989-EditAter being trapped inside the garage for days during incessant snowfall, the temp suddenly jumped upwards long enough to melt it away.  So yesterday we revved the Rascal up, had a spirited romp on side roads, then returned home to do a much-needed but chilly two-bucket wash to get rid of some road grime.

Must report that the Blue Rascal started immediately after a couple of weeks of very cold downtime, didn’t need any fluids topped, was barely down in air pressure readings, and ran, well,  perfectly.

This morning the snow is again falling and the frigid wind made the dogwalk with Charlie B.  an unpleasant experience, and will probably preclude another drive today.

Porsche’s First

This unrestored P1 electric vehicle from 1898 has been sitting in a warehouse since 1902 and is the first vehicle ever built by Ferdinand Porsche, founder of the company that bears his name.
See the story on this 1898 electric Porsche.

I Like Porsches, But …

When I was attending college some years ago, a classmate was visited by his parents one weekend and he was seen driving around their brand new car.   I looked over this automobile carefully in the parking lot,  and its allure has never lost me since, even to point of certain vows to have one myself, somehow, despite all of its baggage.   And now, I find that a near dead-ringer has appeared in that dreaded temptation-ridden digital perversion, Bring a Trailer (BaT):
