Rush

Our family and some of our friends have become somewhat caught up in the Oscar season feeding frenzy in which we try to see the nominees before awards are given.  I finally got around this last weekend to watching Rush, and perhaps like many commentators, was surprised and disappointed that Ron Howard’s work did not garner an Academy Award nomination of some kind.  Rush, as you may know, chronicles the now-legendary rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt for Formula 1 World Championship honors.   Not the greatest film I have ever seen, but easily the best auto racing film out of Hollywood I’ve ever seen.

Thomas Aquinas, Dan Neil and the Porsche 911 Turbo

dan-neil_porsche911turboA number of years ago, my brother (himself formerly a university creative writing instructor) told me about his favorite contemporary automotive writer, Dan Neil, then working for the Los Angeles Times.  At some point, Neil was drafted by the Wall Street Journal where he continues to vividly pen his reviews and insights into Things Automotive.  One item I missed was his take on the 2011 911 Turbo, but my brother directed my attention to this philosophical read of the first order.  I’ve told you a little bit about Dan Neil, but in case you missed that high school history class on the day Thomas Aquinas was discussed, you’ll have to do your own reading.  But only after you have read the Dan Neil piece.

Blue Rascal Deceit

Didn’t get to address the (much needed) bodywork today, so after the heavy rains subsided, daughter Ivi and I decided to go driving.  (Might be her last chance to drive the thing before leaving for Africa.)  We decided that we would try some photography in a way that would distract from the needed bodywork, the needed wash and other appearance factors.  But in the end we said, what the heck, show it with warts and all.

BaT Strikes Again

Ferry Porsche and the Four-Cam Moter, circa 1957

Ferry Porsche and the Four-Cam Motor, circa 1957

Bring A Trailer, undoubtedly for many of us, is a favorite web destination.  The BaT (http://bringatrailer.com/) site, whether you are a collector or just a window shopper, is always entertaining and frequently educational.  And if you don’t read the community commentary you are missing half of what it is all about.

From time to time, an astonishing post — whether for the rarity of the vehicle, the audacity of its seller, the humor, the controversy, whatever it may be — makes it onto the BaT pages.  Such might be this restored early Porsche 4-cam engine, said to have been removed from a 1957 Carrera GT and numbered among only 1,700 such engines ever built.

I just checked the eBay listing, and the current bid now stands at this writing at US $136,200.00.

One For Christmas

Yep, this appeared for me under the tree this year.  My daughter wants to paint it to match the Copenhagen Blue of the Blue Rascal.
