The 944 that defeated fascism?

Herman directs my attention to this article, referenced in the latest PCA Newsletter, written by one Pablo Deferrari, about his epiphany that opened his 911-chauvinistic eyes to the allure of the 944.  Read it here.

A Ghetto GoPro

Kind of a redneck solution to an on-car cam.  This morning I removed my sunroof, attached a point & shoot Nikon Coolpix P71000 to a Gorillapod, sat it all on a chunk of foam, crisscrossed it with gaffers tape, and tethered the camera with paracord.  Set it to video mode and started driving around town and up a canyon road until the pavement ran out. Then I dropped by Eric’s shop to show the rig off.  Well, it sorta works.  The vid is actually fairly good quality, but it could definitely use some stabilization.  The deal-breaker is that I have no external mic for the camera, so the wind noise defeats the sweet sounds of the 2.5L NA engine.  May post some of the videos once I strip out the audio track (almost defeats the purpose).  Maybe I have to go for a more suitable GoPro scenario after all.

The Alabama Solution

hoover_pd_porscheNot only does the city of Hoover, Alabama (pop. 82,000; suburb of Birmingham), confiscate cars from criminals, but they repurpose them as well for their own needs.  Here is how one drug bust led to a new addition to the Police stable: http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/24/alabama-slammah-seized-porsche-911-becomes-newest-member-of-hoo/.

Appearances Can Deceive

rennsport_jaegermeisterHerman sends this along, a photo taken at the shop where his 944 recently underwent some care & feeding.  To the right of Herm’s Silver Baby is an orange beast (strikingly reminiscent of the Svenson SP2 racer), which I am told belongs to the shop’s owner and sports a Chevy V8 underhood and appears to be simultaneously race-prepared yet licensed for the street.  For anyone interested in these kinds of (sacreligious to some) conversions, you could start looking at 944hybridsforumotion.com, 944transformations.com or renegadehybrids.com.

Peaches and Porsche

So this morning, nearly at the crack of dawn, the whole family takes off in the Pathfinder to catch Jason and retrieve the P-Car.  As we have already traveled almost 100 miles, we press on in our little convoy another 60 miles to a pick-it-yourself farm.   Negotiating dust and mud, we put the 944’s off road prowess to the test, carefully and slowly escorting the ‘Finder to the peach orchard of choice.  Then the men, having discharged their Hunter role, flee to the pavement and make a 2 hour return trip through rolling hills and mountains, sans sunroof, and leave mother and daughter to their Gatherers role.   Now they have returned home with incredible bounty by the boxfuls, and it will soon be time for me to give attention to the cosmetic needs of the now-beautifully-performing Nine-Four-Four.

A 960 In Our Future?

Couple of views of the mid-engined 960, said to be slotted between the 911 and the 918, perhaps due in about 2017.

Just A Kid’s Dream Car

Today while browsing a gallery of exotics soon to be auctioned at Pebble Beach, I came across one that brought back memories. As a youngster of about twelve years, I regularly plastered the walls of my room with 50s-era Ferraris and Maseratis, torn from car magazines of the time, and spent many an hour drawing my own visual interpretations and custom designs for the lot.   And here is a splendid 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spyder of that ilk:
